Paving Stone Installation – Edmonton & Surrounding areas
Jim has many years of experience installing paving stone as it was one of his main services when he first started his company. Jim and James stay up-to-date on new paving stones each year that become available on the market, and are always keeping up-to-date on new and sometimes better ways to install paving stone. Jim likes to work side-by-side with the customer throughout the job and is always willing to change the design at a moment’s notice.
Paving Stone Installation Process
The process starts with Jim helping the individual pick out which type of pavers that works for each application, whether it’s a sidewalk, patio, or driveway, and which type of paver matches the yard and the customer’s personality. Once the pavers are picked out it’s time to dig out the base, the base is what the paving stone is laid on. First, we dig out 4 to 12 inches of soil, each type of paving stone application uses different depths of bases ie, sidewalks, patios, driveways.
We then cut and place geotextiles depending on the application on the bottom of the base, and then cover it with road crush. We cover it with about 2 or 3 inches of road crush at a time and roughly rake it out level, we then run our compactor over the base which packs the road crush down with vibration and the weight of the compactor. We repeat that process until there are a full 8 inches of road crush. Before we compact the last layer of road crush we use screed boards to level the base and direct water. After the last layer of road crush is packed we add screeding sand which levels the base and fixes and dips or unwanted slopes in the road crush.
Once the base is prepped we start to install the paving stone. There are many different patterns and custom layouts that we can do depending on what the individual wants. Once all the paving stone is installed we then have to cut the paving stone to fit depending on the size and uniqueness of the project. Once the paving stone is complete we then sweep polymeric sand into the paving stone which creates a watertight seal that helps hold the pavers in place and stops weeds from growing.
We get all of our paving stone from Burnco on the west side of Edmonton, They supply us with all the brand name pavers we use like Expoctere, Barkman, and Techo Bloc. There are many different styles of pavers to choose from.
Paving Stone FAQ
How long does a paving stone patio last?
A paving stone patio installed correctly will last for decades, and the good thing about paving stone is that if one paver breaks or is chipped they can be individually replaced without having to replace the entire project. If you were to have an incident where the pavers were lifted and the ground base was destroyed, the individual pavers could still be salvaged and the base would have to be revealed and the pavers could be relayed.
How much maintenance is there to paving stone?
There is some maintenance for your paving stone; there is sand called polymeric sand which is swept into the paving stone which over the years can wash away. We recommend sweeping in this sand each year, or every 2 years, we leave a bag with each of our clients when we complete and paving stonework.
Is paving stone better than concrete?
In the long run, we believe the answer is yes, the reason why paving stone is better then concrete is because with paving stone you have many individual pieces so if there is a part of the paving stone that was damaged the broken pavers can be replaced at a low cost and brought back to its original look, where concrete can crack and start to crumble over the years and cannot be fixed at a low cost and be brought back to its original look.
Jim believes that working with individual clients on a day-to-day basis throughout the job is a very important aspect when it comes to choosing your paving stone installer, when it comes to paving stone there are so many types, colours, sizes, strengths, and textiles that it can become overwhelming, and that is why it is very important to have a paving stone contractor who will help you choose the best matching brick for your personality, your yard, and to make sure it matches the rest of the colours in your area (ie., house colour or fence colour) and ensuring your yard has perfect colour contrasts.
